WHS Octagon Club Selling T-Shirts for Annual Pink Out Fundraiser
WAPAKONETA- The Wapakoneta High School Octagon Club is kicking off the new 2024-25 school year with their annual Pink Out T-Shirt Fundraiser. It runs from now until September 27th and the Wapakoneta Football Pink Out Game scheduled for October 18th when they host the Bath Wildcats.
The Pink Out Fundraiser, a staple of the Octagon Club’s service initiatives, invites students, families, and local residents to don their most festive pink attire in support of all cancer awareness. “The Octagon Club decides to give back to the community with the Pink Out Fundraiser because we believe in raising awareness for those who, at times, aren't able to raise awareness for themselves. We as a group believe in raising awareness towards causes that affect our own community,” said Anja Walters, the club president. “I think the Octagon Club means change for the betterment of our community. It allows students to take action and learn how to help the people around them at a young age with community service,” Walters added.
The WHS Octagon Club is a student organized club that does community service projects not only around the high school, but around the community as well. Some of the club's service projects include stadium cleanups, a free community movie night, visiting patients at the Gardens Nursing Home monthly, a teacher appreciation breakfast, and many more exciting things. “I personally believe the Octagon Club is a wonderful club run by amazing advisors that allows students who are interested in giving back to their community a wonderful opportunity to do so,” Walters expressed.
The Wapakoneta Football Pink Out Game is a long-standing tradition begun by the Athletic Boosters over 25 years ago to help raise awareness and donations to fight all types of cancers at a home varsity football game in October. In 2013, the Pink Out Fundraiser became an Octagon Club service project. The club has continued the t-shirt sale tradition and collaborates with the student spirit committee each year. Donations are raised through a t-shirt sale to students, their families, and the entire community. “A meaningful tradition for students is to write their name of cancer warriors in their lives on the banner that the football players run through prior to the game,” said Jackie Martell, an advisor of the Octagon Club.
Last year, the club raised $1,878 dollars for the Cancer Association of Auglaize County to distribute to local families battling all types of cancer through their pink out t-shirt fundraiser. “We appreciate all the donations and all the help we get from all the organizations and associations in Auglaize County,” said April Grimm, the director of the Cancer Association of Auglaize County. “It means a lot and goes a long way to help out our clients,” Grimm added.
