Smash It Demolition Derby Thrills Despite Rain at Auglaize County Fair
WAPAKONETA- Under a drizzly sky and with the rain pouring steadily, the Auglaize County Fairgrounds came alive Thursday night with the roar of engines and the clang of metal at the annual Smash It Demolition Derby. Despite the soggy conditions, the event drew a spirited crowd eager to witness the chaos and excitement of the derby.
The rain-soaked pit did little to dampen the spirits of both drivers and spectators. The Street Stock Full class was a particular highlight, with Doug Fisher from Wapakoneta claiming top honors in the muddy chaos. Fisher’s performance earned him the first place trophy, while his fellow Wapakoneta driver Colton Hower secured second place. Rounding out the top three was Randy Schmerge, also from Wapakoneta, in a display of local dominance in the full class.
The Street Stock Mini Heat One provided its own set of thrills. Brett Howell from Decatur, IN navigated the slippery mud to take first place, overcoming a strong field of competitors. Blayn Aller from Celina finished in second place, with Chase Mobley, also from Celina, securing third.Â
In Heat Two of the Street Stock Mini, Issac Elson from Sidney demonstrated exceptional control and strategy, finishing in first place. Kevin Shappell from Wapakoneta took second place, while Spencer Bevington from West Alexandria finished in third.Â
In the finale, Street Stock Mini Van/Mini Truck/SUV category, drivers proved to be a local triumph for Sidney. Frank Christian led the pack to win first place, followed closely by Richard Reprogle in second and Jeremiah Jacobs in third. The dominance of Sidney drivers in this category underscored the strong local presence and competitive spirit in the derby.
Despite the soggy conditions, the Smash It Demolition Derby at the Auglaize County Fair delivered highly-anticipated excitement and showcased the best of local and regional driving talent. As the event concluded, spectators and participants alike left with memories of a thrilling night where the rain was no match for the roaring engines and adrenaline-fueled action.
