Lady Redskins Sweep Findlay in Non-League Finale
WAPAKONETA- The Wapakoneta Girls Tennis squad got a clean 5-0 sweep on Tuesday against Findlay in their last non-conference match of the season.
“Won 5-0 tonight against Findlay, and that extends our match win streak to five! Very proud of our girls, and I feel like we’re getting ready to peak at the right time of the season,” Wapakoneta Head Coach Austin Scott said.
In first singles play, Wapakoneta sophomore Liberty Jolly got the win over Findlay junior Abi Russell 6-2, 6-2. “Liberty has strung together eight really strong performances in a row, and her confidence is growing, which is extremely important in tennis,” Scott noted.
Wapakoneta junior Kate Eley defeated Trojan sophomore Rosalynn Mayle 6-1, 6-4 in the second singles match. “Kate has now won four of her last five matches. Her turnaround and growth from earlier this season has been incredible, and growth is something we talk about constantly with our team,” Scott said.
In third singles, Lady Redskin junior Brooklyn Mowery downed Findlay junior Kendall Beall 7-5, 6-2. “Brooklyn is now 14-0 on the season. She’s been faced with so much pressure and challenges during this streak, and she’s conquered them all,” Scott explained. “Extremely proud of her fight as always,” Scott added.
In the first doubles match, Wapakoneta juniors Anja Walters and Mylie Moser came out on top over Trojans Willow Wetzel and Reese Hagedom 6-4, 6-2. “Anja and Mylie won their eighth straight match. They trailed early, but they came back with a strong response to win that opening set and run away with the second,” Scott expressed. “I can always count on them digging in and showing their grit when they need it most.”
Redskin sophomore Hannah Palmer and junior Nevaeh Dancer got the win over Findlay sophomore Audrey Schroeder and junior Lauren Taber 2-6, 6-1, (10-4) in second doubles play. “Hannah and Nevaeh played so well earlier this week against Shawnee and fell short in three sets. Tonight they started off slow and then made an unbelievable rally to change the momentum of the match in their favor,” stated Scott. “They rode that the rest of the way and came up with a victory in a match-deciding third set tiebreaker. So proud of them,” Scott added.
With the win, Wapakoneta improved to 10-4 on the season and will have their final regular season match Thursday at home for Senior Night against Kenton at 4:30 p.m.. Then, it’s on to the Western Buckeye League Tournament next Thursday morning at UNOH.
